Between traditional Emergency Rooms, Urgent Care centers, and Freestanding ERs, choosing the best facility for medical care can be confusing. Although Freestanding Emergency Rooms have existed for over a decade, they are still an unfamiliar concept. To help our community make an informed decision on where to seek medical care, let’s go over three common misconceptions about Freestanding ERs: level of medical care provided, average wait time, and daily hours of operation.

1. FALSE: The Level of Care Is Not The Same As A Hospital ER

Freestanding Emergency Centers such as Coppell ER, offer the same level of care as a hospital-based emergency room. This also includes laboratory services and diagnostic imaging equipment including an X-ray machine, CT Scanner, and Ultrasound. Staffed 24/7 with board-certified ER doctors, we also have the capability to treat conditions ranging from severe allergic reactions to strokes or heart attacks. If a patient requires further care, Coppell Emergency Room can accommodate for direct admission through a transfer agreement with the nearby hospital.

2. FALSE: Freestanding ERs Have Long Wait Times

Urgent Care facilities’ average wait times range from 15 to 30 minutes. At Freestanding ERs such as Coppell ER, there is little to no wait time. At Coppell ER, we understand that medical emergencies are unplanned for. Our top priority is to treat our patients quickly and effectively so that our patients can return to their normal schedules and responsibilities. Because minutes count in an emergency, Coppell ER follows the same triage protocols as hospital-based ERs to determine priority for treatment. While a majority of our patients are taken to their private rooms after completing their paperwork, patients experiencing life-threatening conditions are immediately escorted to their room for treatment.

3. FALSE: Freestanding ERs Have Limited Hours

Medical emergencies aren’t limited to normal business hours! Many medical centers are not open on Sunday and Urgent Care Centers often close by 8 or 9 pm. Freestanding ERs including Coppell ER, are open 24/7 —even holidays. Our team of board-certified physicians, emergency room nurses, CT and X-ray technicians, and front office staff work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide our patients with quick and individualized care.
